The Old Schoolroom: A Hidden Gem in Felkirk

Nestled on the boundary of West and South Yorkshire in the Parish of South Hiendley lies a historical treasure—The Old Schoolroom, a Grade 11 Listed Building, which is situated in the churchyard of St Peter’s Church, Felkirk. This charming building, steeped in history, has long been a cornerstone of the local community and a testament to the area’s rich cultural heritage.

A Historical Haven

The Old Schoolroom was constructed in the 16th century and is more than just a building; it’s a portal to the past. About 1637 Prudence Berrie endowed a school at Felkirk with £100 to be used towards the maintenance of a school master. The building used was The Old Schoolroom in the churchyard. The Viscounts Galway of Hodroyd Hall continued to pay the annual salary of a school master, as well as appointing one.

The Old Schoolroom ceased to be a school in 1837 when a new school was built on South Hiendley Common.

Originally, it served as a vital educational hub for the children of Felkirk and surrounding villages. Its location, adjacent to the beautiful St. Peter’s Church, underscores its significance as a focal point of community life.

Over the centuries, The Old Schoolroom has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community.

Architectural Charm

The Old Schoolroom is a fine example of traditional Yorkshire architecture. Built with local sandstone and featuring a stone slate roof, it exudes a timeless charm that resonates with visitors and locals alike. The building’s well-preserved details, such as its 5 light mullioned windows leaded with moulded stone over and sturdy wooden beams, the 2 raking stone buttresses either side of the boarded and studded door speak to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Inside, you can almost hear the echoes of lessons past, as the structure still retains elements reminiscent of its original use.

A Community Hub

Today, The Old Schoolroom continues to be a vital part of Felkirk’s community. It serves as a versatile space for a wide range of activities and events that bring people together. Community lunches, group meetings, and the ever-popular bacon butty mornings are just a few examples of the regular gatherings held here. The venue also hosts art exhibitions, craft fairs, and delightful strawberry teas, showcasing the creativity and camaraderie of the local community. Additionally, The Old Schoolroom provides a comforting and welcoming space for more solemn occasions, such as funeral teas, demonstrating its role as a place of support and connection during life’s significant moments.
