Route Overview

  1. Start at the Church Lych Gate
Turn right onto Slack Lane. After approximately 100 metres, turn left down the right-hand side of a small row of brick houses.
  2. Descend Through Fields and Woodland
Walk across the field, down a gentle hill to reach a wooden stile. Climb over the stile, turn right, and follow the narrow path downhill between hedges and trees.
  3. Cross the Stiles & Ascend the Hill
Near the bottom of the hill, look for an opening in the trees on your left where the next stile is. Climb over and walk straight across the grass field to another wooden stile with a hedge on the left. Cross this stile, followed by three more, until you reach the top of the hill.
  4. Enter the Recreation Ground & Kirkgate Lane
After climbing over the fifth stile, you will enter the Recreation Ground. Continue straight, slightly left towards an iron stile at the tree line. Climb over and walk through the small wooded area to reach Kirkgate Lane.
  5. Pass Hodroyd House & Historic Gateposts
Turn left and walk along Kirkgate Lane towards Hodroyd House. Pause to observe the old gateposts—this was once the entrance to Hodroyd Hall when it operated as a convent in the early 1900s. Looking closely at the left-hand pillar, you can still see evidence.
  6. Return to the Church
Continue along Kirkgate Lane, cross the railway bridge, and follow the road back to the Lych Gate.

Additional Notes:

  • Weather Considerations: The footpaths can be slippery or muddy after wet weather, so take extra care, especially on grassy or shaded sections.
  • Alternative Start Points: If starting from South Hiendley, you can begin at the Recreation Ground or Kirkgate Lane and follow the route in reverse.
